You certainly know ‘Falasarna’ the beach, but do you know ‘Phalasarna’ the ancient harbour-town?
Ancient Phalasarna was a wealthy Cretan town located on the once important trade route between the Aegean Sea and Ptolemaic Alexandria. It minted its own coin, it was engaged in several wars, its inhabitants werealsopirates and for centuriesafteritsabandonmentitwasconsidered a lost city!
This archaeological site is a very rare one and it embodies an exciting part of the Cretan history. So, if you want to ‘decode’ and understand it with the help of an archaeologist/tourist guide and not just wander around its ruins, then this tour is for you!
Together we will explore the tombs, the winery, the fortification towers, the quarries, the harbor’s quays and basin and we will bring back to life the splendor of Hellenistic Phalasarna, the military conflict with the Romans, as well as its peculiar geological past. The area will provide an inspiring background to our archaeo-walk as the site is surrounded by olive groves, the imposing rocky promontory where the acropolis used to be and, of course, the sea.

This is an opportunity to combine an easy hike with archaeology and nature! Polyrrhenia, located only 7km south from Kissamos and once one of the most powerful hilltop ancient cities of western Crete, awaits for you to explore it. The picturesque village is a blend of traditional old houses, some of them with embedded ancient remains, an Hellenistic and Roman aquedust, Venetian archways , fortification towers and rock-cut houses and cisterns. On the way to the ancient acropolis of Polyrrhenia there is a 19th-century church, which is built with curious inscribed blocks and some impressive Hellenistic and Byzantine fortification walls.
But how did this hiiltop city-state manage to survive throughout those troubled periods and preserve all of those traces? What was its relation with the strong ones of each period? Whats the meaning of its name and was there a cult on Nymphs? and where are the temples of its acropolis?
The reward for anyone that walks up to the top of the acropolis hill will be the breathtaking views from the highest summits of the white Mountains to the deep blue sea of Kissamos gulf.

Most of us know, or have heard of the ‘Minoan civilization’ that flourished in Bronze Age Crete. But how many know what happened after the Minoans on this island? How did its inhabitants react to the fall of the Minoan palatial centers, who were the ‘newcomers’ and how did they mingle with the ‘locals’? In what ways did the society change in the following centuries? What was its new political organization, where did the money come from and to what gods did the people believe in?
The archaeological site of Aptera, at 15 km east of Chania, can offer the answers to the questions above and to many more. The exploration of its several, considerablyvariedand well-preserved ruins, including a theatre, fortification walls, a cemetery, water reservoirs, a fortress, a monastery and WWII pillboxes, will built a fascinating narration that will introduce you to the Cretan history through an educational yet entertaining time-travel, only to be interrupted by the breathtaking views at the White Mountains and the bay of Souda.
