Experience Traditional Wine-Making at Metohi Farmhouse in Crete
Discover the charm of old-fashioned wine-making and immerse yourself in a 90-year-old tradition at Metohi Farmhouse in Kissamos, Chania, Crete. Our family has been producing various grape varieties since 1928, using their own vineyards to create award-winning wines.
Join us for an unforgettable tour of our farm, where you will explore the olive groves, vineyards, orchards, and gardens, while learning about the history of our family and the area’s Cretan products.
Then it’s time to step on the grapes and make some wine! Our grapes are thrown into the traditional wine press, and everyone can join in, making as much “must” as needed for the wine of the year. It’s a joyous occasion, celebrated with a wooden table full of delicious appetizers, accompanied by last year’s harvest wine.
Under the guidance of Giannis and Eleni, the family’s fourth generation, continuers of the tradition, you will carry out the entire traditional winemaking process step by step. Finally, you will sit down to enjoy a scrumptious traditional Cretan dinner, made with the family’s organic products.
The Metohi Farmhouse tour also includes wine and raki tasting, transportation to and from our farmhouse, and is suitable for all ages. This 5-6 hour experience costs 80 € per adult and 40 € per child (up to 13-years old).
Yiannis, the owner of Metochi Farmhouse, invites you to make wine, eat, drink, and sing together, just as his family has done for generations. Here are a few words from him:
“When I was around 12 years old, my cousin unintentionally pushed me, causing me to fall into a large barrel containing a little bit of must. Although the incident was shocking at the time, it was eventually forgotten.
However, what is impossible to forget are the memories I have of my grandfather and all of those who helped harvest and press the grapes every September. The characteristic smell of fresh grapes, the taste of my grandmother’s appetizers, and, of course, the fun that lasted all day!
Now, the old grape press of my grandfather Giannis has been repaired and is available every September to welcome my friends, as well as anyone else who wishes, to join us in making the wine and tsikoudia of the year. Above all, we come together to have a good time, eat, drink and sing!
Our family’s farm has several grape beds and a small vineyard that receive our care throughout the year to offer us their best fruit possible. When the grapes ripen, we collect and press them in the traditional way to get the must that we use in various ways, something that we will all learn together during our tour.
Throughout your visit, you will discover all the secrets of our production and winemaking, and, of course, you will have the opportunity to try traditional Cretan products cooked by my mother and sister!
You are welcome to Metochi Farmhouse.”
